Public rejects three terms of Indonesian President's office
Around last February, the discourse of a three term president's office began to surface. This can happen because there are indeed some parties who are asking for the presidential term to be extended. The teacher of SMAN 1 Dukun, Indah(45), gave the opinion that this discourse could come from several elites who took office, as well as from the faction that benefited from the continuity of the current presidential term.
"It emerged from the political elite, the person who had an interest in the current government. Although the development in the current presidential term is extraordinary, it still needs reorganization, giving opportunities to the younger generation who have potential. So the conclusion that carries this discourse is people who attach importance to the interests of the class or may fight for personal interests, just to maintain their current status," Indah said.
In addition to Indah, UI Political science student, Nur Rahma (20), also said that maybe it was from the elite and interested parties who carried this discourse.
"Apart from the political elite, there are also the people. The comparison is more to the political elites than to ordinary people. It is not necessarily from the public to amend the Constitution. Again, it is the political elite who has the most votes.
Because only a few parties are asking for an extension of the term of office, this may not be the public seeing the existence of something that is indeed very urgent or something that the current president cannot leave behind. After all, in the Constitution the term of office of the president is already arranged in such a way that it should be implemented now and for the future.
"The addition of the presidential period is obviously not in accordance with the constitution, in the Constitution it has been conveyed that the presidential period is a maximum of three terms, we do not need to make laws if we cannot refer to the Constitution that has been made," Indah said adding.
According to Citra, this is a fairly normal thing because it is approaching the end of the presidential term, and also the critical period of presidential leadership for the public to assess. The goal is again for the benefit of elections in 2024. This discourse clearly violates the existing constitution and also Far from the word may
The discourse on extending the term of office of a three term president or a three term president that continues to roll out, in her view, is no longer appropriate and leads to a less productive situation. Therefore, efforts are needed to stop polemics that do not touch on meeting the basic needs of today's society.
Several political parties in Indonesia have held meetings and are competing for the appointment of presidential candidates and vice presidential candidates in the 2024 elections. This shows that some political parties refused to extend and even realize the discourse of a three term president.
“If this discourse keep going, it will get bored, others will be stuck, which could be a ticking time bomb. Yesterday several parties discussed and yes indeed returned to party boredom and also party jealousy," said Muji (60), a member of the Golkar party.
Absolute power tends to corrupt, if there is no restriction on power then corruption will tend to occur. Learning from the new order period, which is a reign of up to 32 years, there are many problems that have not been completely resolved until now. Hope from Nur Rahma is not to continue this three period discourse.
In addition, Indah also objected to this discourse. "Try to review the political elites, whether this kind of discourse fits the existing constitution. It is hoped that the political elites will remain consistent in sticking to the existing constitution," Indah said.
However, there are also those who still support this three period discourse, H (20) one of the UII medical students, whose name does not want to be mentioned, said that, it is necessary to extend the current presidential period, because this is needed to continue what has been proclaimed by the current president. If the president is replaced, it is feared that it can ignore what the current president has proclaimed. Things that the current president has not solved can be overlooked and become useless.
